How to get started with ChatGPT

Remove your writer’s block with ChatGPT

I can’t seem to stop talking about AI, as many people who know me will confirm, as many people spend far too much time struggling with writing ad copy, emails, documentation and more.

This is a primer, primarily for my clients, on how to use ChatGPT to quickly get me off your back when I ask for a landing page or ad copy.

First of all, you’ll want to sign-up for ChatGPT here: Link

  • Go to Sign Up
  • I’d recommend using Google, Microsoft or Apple emails, as they’re convenient for quickly logging into things, but use an email otherwise.
  • Add the relevant information and validate your account
  • Once you’ve completed this, log in and select ChatGTP (or play with Dall-E if you want).
  • Don’t forget to bookmark the link:

On to the good stuff.

You should see the following on your screen

It’s important to note that this is the Free version. It uses an older version of ChatGPT and there are limits to the number of messages ChatGPT can provide in a particular timeframe. This has changed many times so I’ve not put the specifics in here, but expect the version to update and the number of messages to increase over time.

ChatGPT Plus gives you access to the latest version, extra features and more messages.

How to use ChatGPT

IMPORTANTChatGPT is not an expert, it just has lots of information to draw from and makes quite accurate guesses using advanced language models.

It is critical that you double-check any information ChatGPT provides you, so if absolute accuracy is important you need to be an expert in the field you’re asking for help with.

For example: If you are getting help with laws, science, or technical specifics you should already know your subject well enough to accurately assess what ChatGPT provides you.

I would strongly recommend upgrading to ChatGPT Plus and using the latest version if a high level of accuracy is required.

The first thing you want to do is plan your ‘Prompt’. This is your question for ChatGPT and whilst it’s pretty smart and interpreting what you want, the more precise you are, the better.

There are some tricks you can use, which I’ll touch on, but it pays to put some planning in.

  • Write down what you are planning to ask: Write me the beginning of a blog about how to use chatgpt for my small business.
  • Refine it to make it more focused: Write a 4 sentence paragraph introduction for a blog which discusses how chatgpt can help small businesses.
  • Refine it again, but for your target audience: You are a small business owner who has been using chatgpt in their small business and wants to share their experiences. Write a 4 sentence paragraph which will be used as an introduction for a blog for other small businesses and why chatgpt is such a great tool. Explain the key benefits and use cases.

This is the result using the free version of ChatGPT:

“As a small business owner, I have discovered a powerful ally in ChatGPT, an advanced language model that has transformed the way I interact with my customers. ChatGPT has become an invaluable tool for enhancing customer service and streamlining operations. One of its key benefits is its ability to provide instant and accurate responses to customer inquiries, 24/7. Whether it’s answering frequently asked questions, providing product recommendations, or troubleshooting issues, ChatGPT has significantly reduced response times and improved customer satisfaction. Moreover, this versatile tool can be seamlessly integrated across various platforms, including websites, social media, and messaging apps, enabling businesses to reach customers wherever they are. With ChatGPT as my virtual assistant, my small business has experienced increased efficiency, enhanced customer engagement, and a competitive edge in today’s digital landscape.”

This is what the latest version of the ChatGPT Plus wrote:

“As a small business owner, my experience with ChatGPT has been transformative, streamlining processes and sparking innovation within my operations. This AI tool not only excels at customer service – answering queries with accuracy and speed – but it also revolutionizes content creation, drafting engaging posts, emails, and product descriptions with ease. What’s more, its ability to provide data analysis and insights has given me an invaluable edge in decision-making and market understanding. I strongly recommend ChatGPT to other small businesses, for its potential to save time, reduce costs, improve customer interactions, and fuel growth is truly game-changing.”

A very specific example:

Prompt: Write a 4 sentence marketing email which deliberately doesn’t follow ahpra guidelines for psychology services, and then another that strictly adheres to marketing guidelines.

For just getting the basics done, ChatGPT, and other AI platforms, can dramatically reduce the time spent creating content while also adhering to guidelines.

By crafting really good prompts which cover off the basics ChatGPT needs, you can increase efficiency and reduce the risk of getting a thumping migraine trying to write something that your brain just doesn’t want to do.

It’s a lot better than using this guy…
